How Do You Test For Adrenal Fatigue?
Cortisol, the fight or flight hormone, is produced by a healthy adrenal gland. Out of balance, it can create many of the symptoms listed above. Testing for cortisol must involve 4 points during a 24 hour period in order to determine how it cascades through the day.
Some doctors will do only a cortisol test with a morning blood draw. Unfortunately, this tells you little about your adrenal function as you must be able to see what it does throughout the remainder of the day in order to treat. Perhaps it is low all day; or it could be too low in the morning and too high at night. Those two scenarios are treated differently, so gathering the information correctly is vital.
The Art of Healing
Adrenal problems often happen when we fail to nurture ourselves sufficiently.
Are you ignoring personal boundaries and giving up too much of your time and emotions to others?
Are you feeling shame or guilt about taking time to rest?
Are you disassociating your emotions and taxing your energy constantly by suppressing something traumatic that needs to be resolved?
The Science of Healing
Testing the adrenal function appropriately is most often performed by a natural doctor, a naturopath or chiropractor.
Tests must be performed throughout a full day – one test of serum cortisol in the morning tells you nothing about the overall function of your adrenal glands.
Saliva is the easiest utilized for this test. If your doctor isn’t doing a 4-catch test, then find another doctor.
