What Causes Irritable Bowel?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is most often a result of inflammation from pathogens in the gut. This comes from undetected bacterial overgrowth, hidden H. Pylori, overlooked Candida and fungus problems (so common) or some other agent. This imbalance in your Microbiome (learn more here) is the root cause of most chronic health issues.
Finding and fixing these underlying immune issues are key to overall health in the body, and especially important to heal digestion problems.
One of my biggest pet peeves about traditional medical approaches to health is how so many “diseases” are named by their symptom.
The “diagnosis” of Irritable Bowel just tells you that, yes, you have irritations in your bowel. You already knew that, didn’t you? But why do you have this?
And sometimes, the root of your GI problems lies in your hormones. Let’s get to the bottom of it. Your body can heal when supported in a healthy way.
Signs and Symptoms
Can digestion problems make you tired?
Absolutely! Without the ability to absorb nutrition from the foods you eat, your body doesn’t have enough building blocks to create energy.
Over time, the resources consumed by your gut are greater than what they give back to the body in healing nourishment. The slow depletion of health erodes cells in almost every system.
Why does it seem everybody has depression?
Did you know that the neurotransmitter Serotonin is made predominately in the GI tract? Without gut health, your levels of Serotonin can plummet. This severe issue in the United States especially has lead to an almost epidemic amount of SSRI and other mood drugs being prescribed daily.
Again, this treats the symptom, rather than fixing the underlying cause.
And what has contributed to so much GI problems?
- Overuse of antibiotics impacting the microbiome of your gut
- Chemical ingestion like pesticides
- Steroid prescriptions
- Cooking in plastics
- Refined and processed foods
Let's talk about Food Allergies
Over the years, my opinion about food allergy testing has changed. Years ago, I tested many of my patients with inflammatory problems for food allergies at the onset of their care. The results indicated what foods they should avoid to help their body’s health expression.
What I learned is that when your GI tract is inflamed, you can test positive for almost every food out there. Your gut is in a constant state of inflammation, and it is responding to everything in it with an inflamed, i.e. allergic, response. Needless to say, this resulted in some almost impossible dietary requirements for patients to follow, which meant that was a lot of money wasted on a test that they couldn’t comply with the results.
I’ve since modified my approach. Now, almost everyone that comes into my clinic starts with GI tract testing, and then we work on what the labs indicate for the next several months.
